1. Information we collect
Elamia collects information needed to operate a parent-controlled family account, including:
- Parent account information: email address and authentication information.
- Child profile information: first name, grade level, a self-chosen passcode, and an optional avatar.
- Child-created content: creative writing, opinion writing, reading responses, reading comprehension answers, journal entries, and picture-prompt writing.
- Progress information: writing history, feedback, points, streaks, rewards, wishlist items, and simple mood check-ins.
2. How we use information
We use information to operate Elamia, authenticate accounts, provide the requested learning experience, generate educational feedback, maintain progress information for the family account, provide support, and process payments for paid subscriptions.
We do not sell or rent personal information. We do not use children's information for behavioral advertising.
3. AI feedback
When a child submits writing for coaching, the writing is processed through OpenAI's API via a server-side service. This request includes the writing content, the child's grade level, and the child's first name (used so the coach can personalize its response, e.g. "Great job, Ellie!"). Account identifiers, login credentials, and other family account information are not included in this request.
For Reading Comprehension's current-events content, real news headlines and topics (not article text) are sourced from newsdata.io to keep AI-authored passages current; the AI writes an original passage inspired by the topic, not a summary of any specific article.
Elamia does not use children's writing to train its own AI models. AI feedback is an educational aid and should not be treated as a substitute for a teacher or other qualified professional.
4. Children's privacy
Elamia is designed for children under 13 to use under parent control. A parent creates and controls the family account and adds child profiles. A child's journal entries are private by default; a child can choose to share an individual entry with their parent.
Important: the exact parental-consent process and other COPPA requirements are being reviewed by counsel. This draft does not by itself establish legal compliance.
5. Service providers
Elamia uses the following service providers to operate the product:
- Firebase / Google Cloud for authentication, hosting, and database services.
- OpenAI for generating AI writing feedback from submitted writing.
- newsdata.io for real current-event headlines used to generate Reading Comprehension content.
- Unsplash for stock photography used in writing prompts; child data is not sent to Unsplash.
- Stripe for payment processing; Elamia does not store raw card numbers.
- Resend for account, billing, and notification emails.
- PostHog for product analytics; session events only (e.g. a mission starting or finishing), sent server-side from a Cloud Function, never directly from a child's browser. These events never include writing content, the child's name, or their Firebase account ID, and PostHog is configured to discard IP address data.
6. Data retention and deletion
Progress information — including writing history and skill-tracking data — is retained for the life of the family account, in order to provide longitudinal progress tracking across grades and school years.
A parent may request deletion of their family account and associated data at any time from the Billing section of the parent dashboard. Once a deletion request is made, associated data is deleted within 30 days.
7. Parent rights and requests
Parents may contact us to request access to, correction of, or deletion of information associated with their family account, subject to applicable legal requirements.
